Judith was only 13 years old when she married Athelwulf, King of Wessex. Athewulf was 48 years older than her at about age 61. His first wife had died a few years earlier and he was saddened at her death. A few years later on his way back from Rome he stayed in the French court and was given Judith to wife. Of all English monarchs this age difference was the greatest on record.
Athelwulf died less than two years later and Judith then married, his son, Athelbald, who died only two years after his father. Judith then married Baldwin of Flanders, from whom many Counts of Flanders and eventually Norwegian royalty and even commoners are descended. No children are recorded born to Judith's first two husbands. (See Ashley, British Kings & Queens)
